Scottish biotech company Biotangents has successfully raised £2.3 million in a recent investment round, aimed at transforming the landscape of dairy farming diagnostics.

The funding, led by St Andrews-based investment firm Eos and British Business Investments through their Regional Angels program, will support the development and launch of an innovative on-farm diagnostic device.

Biotangents’ groundbreaking technology addresses a significant challenge in the dairy industry. The company is targeting a “£20bn cow problem,” referring to the substantial economic impact of bovine diseases on the global dairy sector.

Their diagnostic tool aims to revolutionise how farmers detect and manage infectious diseases in cattle, potentially leading to improved herd health and increased productivity.

Chief executive Fiona Marshall said: “Biotangents is on the cusp of full market launch with a technology that leads to better herd health, much improved productivity, and significantly higher levels of sustainability.”

Jill Arnold, investment relationship director at Eos, added: “Scottish science that improves lives, and has global market potential, is core to our focus at Eos and Biotangents fits that criteria perfectly, not just in terms of addressing antimicrobial resistance in livestock, but also in improved animal husbandry.”

With this substantial financial boost, Biotangents is poised to make significant strides in its mission to enhance dairy farming practices through advanced diagnostic solutions. The company’s progress will be closely watched by both the agricultural and biotechnology sectors as it works to bring its revolutionary product to market.
