Sacred Lives is a comprehensive look at the perception and treatment of epilepsy through time. Authored by experienced neurologist and researcher, Professor Ian Bone, it is written for people with epilepsy, their families, and those who come into contact with it through acquaintance or work, as well as those who wish to understand more about the condition which effects so many.

Addressing the evidence on how others in society see those with epilepsy and why negative perceptions and misconceptions can result in stigmatisation, loss of opportunity and social isolation, this book concludes with a personal account on living with epilepsy as a parent, from diagnosis in childhood through to the pitfalls of adult life. It provides guidance, based on experience, to help other families and those with epilepsy on their journey.

Professor Ian Bone stepped into the world of neurology after initially graduating from St Andrews University (MB ChB), moving on to work as a Consultant Neurologist in Glasgow for over 20 years. After becoming an Honorary Professor of Neurology, he is now an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the School of Medicine, University of Glasgow. He has co-authored three textbooks in Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuropathology, and is author or co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

The book is being officially launched as part of National Epilepsy Week at The William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre on Friday 20th May. Quarriers is one of Scotland’s leading health and social care charities, which provides practical care and support for vulnerable children, adults and families who face extremely challenging circumstances.

The William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre provides the only residential assessment and treatment centre in Scotland for adults with epilepsy. The event will see talks, discussions and presentations from leading voices at Quarriers and a panel including members of Epilepsy Connections and Lanarkshire Epilepsy. Professor Ian Bone will also be interviewed about Sacred Lives.
