Kainos’s recent £50 million contract with the UK Ministry of Defence marks a significant partnership aimed at transforming how military data works. As the DDAP Enablement Partner, Kainos will support the evolution of the Defence Data Analytics Platform (DDAP), enhancing the Ministry’s capacity to harness AI and analytics in defence operations.

This three-year contract underscores the Ministry’s commitment to leveraging advanced data analytics and AI to bolster national security. The partnership focuses on developing and maintaining the DDAP, a secure data and analytics solution built on Amazon Web Services. The platform is designed to democratise data access, standardise tooling, and encourage interoperability across the Ministry of Defence.

Brendan Mooney, CEO of Kainos, highlighted the importance of this partnership, saying, “It is a great privilege to expand our partnership with the MoD to drive forward an evolution of how data analytics is used across UK defence. DDAP is a pioneering initiative which we will help to strengthen by introducing new approaches to data management, tooling and governance, and importantly by working closely with personnel across the MoD to understand their specific data needs.”

An MoD spokesperson further emphasised the significance of this collaboration, noting, “The MoD already holds excellent analytical minds and capabilities across defence. The evolution of DDAP will encourage minds to further unite under one true enterprise system, to help meet the ambitions of the Data Strategy for Defence for standardised, assured and efficient data analytics, as well as accelerate the delivery of new technology capabilities including AI innovation.”

The contract will enable Kainos to provide ongoing support for end-users across the MoD, including the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, and other MoD Support Organisations, thereby enhancing the integration of data from various sources and making it accessible for advanced analytics capabilities. This partnership is expected to significantly impact how the Ministry of Defence utilises AI and analytics, potentially reshaping defence operations.

Digital transformation specialist Kainos has secured a significant £50 million contract from the Ministry of Defence to enhance and support the Defence Data Analytics Platform (DDAP). Over the next three years, Kainos will serve as the DDAP Enablement Partner, working to streamline data access and analytics capabilities across the MoD’s operations.

The contract builds upon Kainos’ existing relationship with Defence Digital and marks a major milestone in their growing presence within the UK’s defence sector. The company’s expertise in managing complex projects stems from their experience in joint development ventures, as evidenced by their previous collaborative agreements in the pharmaceutical sector. The impact of this partnership will be evident as Kainos helps standardise how defence personnel and partners access and analyse essential data, making it easier for everyone to make informed decisions. Additionally, this project will showcase how AI technologies can enhance decision-making processes across the defence infrastructure.

Notably, this project will transform the way the MoD handles data. By integrating information from various sources and providing ongoing support to end-users, Kainos is helping create a more connected and efficient defence infrastructure.

They aren’t just building a platform; they’re fostering a data-first mindset across UK defence.

According to Brendan Mooney, CEO of Kainos: “It is a great privilege to expand our partnership with the MoD to drive forward an evolution of how data analytics is used across UK defence.”

The project aligns perfectly with the Data Strategy for Defence objectives, aiming to reduce duplicate analytics initiatives while enabling seamless data integration. This means there will be better defence outcomes through advanced analytics capabilities that weren’t possible before.

An MoD spokesperson pointed out: “The MoD already holds excellent analytical minds and capabilities across defence. The evolution of DDAP will encourage minds to further unite under one true enterprise system, to help meet the ambitions of the Data Strategy for Defence for standardised, assured and efficient data analytics, as well as accelerate the delivery of new technology capabilities including AI innovation.”

This partnership demonstrates Kainos’ technical expertise in evolving data analytics platforms and their commitment to supporting the MoD’s digital vision. As they continue to develop and enhance the DDAP, a transformation will be witnessed in how defence personnel interact with data, making it more accessible and useful for everyone involved in protecting the nation’s interests.
