The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to scientists John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their groundbreaking research on neural networks. This recognition was announced by the Nobel Committee, highlighting the duo’s fundamental contributions to the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

According to the committee, both Hopfield and Hinton played a pivotal role in “foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning through artificial neural networks.” The statement emphasized how machine learning based on these networks is currently revolutionizing science, technology, and everyday life.

Both laureates have a background in statistical physics, and it was their work in this domain that eventually led to the development of modern neural networks. Their research has laid the foundation for today’s advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in deep learning, which powers everything from image recognition to natural language processing.

Last year’s Nobel Prize in Physics went to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier for their experimental development of ultra-short laser pulses. This technology has allowed scientists to “peek inside” atoms, offering an unprecedented view of atomic structure and behavior.
